Is SEO about Rankings?
Recently, I had a client ask me about a slight dip in his rankings. I explained that Google is always changing its algorithm and that this will happen from time to time. The previous ranking returned within 48 hours and it is still steadily climbing the top page of Google. Oddly enough, during this slight fall in ranking, Google Analytics told an interesting story: his traffic had actually INCREASED! Social Media, through our SEO campaign, as it turns out, was the culprit.
Social Media better than Inbound Links?
Another quick hit: How does social media play into search engine rankings? The jury is still out on this one, in truth. Matt Cutts, of Google, seemed to “nod” in agreement that social media will become more important than inbound links in the future as it is a more reliable way of tracking how many people truly enjoy visiting a particular site. It’s also a natural form of popularity. I think with Social Media, what’s more important than rankings is the fact that you gain traffic naturally and it’s traffic that at least knows somebody that you know.
Anchor Text repeats, no longer good for SEO
SEO is a practice of building natural-looking links that are anything but natural! This is sometimes difficult for a newcomer to figure out as he/she is so excited to rank well for 1 keyword or phrase. It’s very important to keep your portfolio balanced. When looking at your link portfolio, be sure to have various types of links with various anchor text pointing to your site. For instance, if I were to build 100 links to my site for “Gym Membership”, then a penalty will likely result from Google. What’s the penalty? Well, the site will not rank well for anything and it can even be banned.
My Thoughts on Buying SEO by the Hour
This will be a quick hit as I have a terribly full day today. A concept hit me. Can SEO by the hour be real? I had a colleague tell me I was really missing an opportunity (a financial opportunity, in truth, is what he meant) by not offering SEO via this pay method. Well, I’m going to just quickly hammer out why I do NOT offer this service.
SEO, a Waste of Money?
I read about SEO. Actually, I read about SEO A LOT! Here is something I've found to be really frustrating. You have two schools of thought: 1. SEO is grand and all things SEO are wonderful. 2. SEO is awful, useless and a complete waste of money. My thoughts are that both can be true. If you have a website that is set up to receive and convert traffic, which automatically assumes you have a product that will sell, then SEO is wonderful. If you have a site that is NOT set up to convert traffic or if your product is undesirable, then SEO is useless and a waste of money.
SEO Scams
Consumers, please be careful. SEO is known as the wild west because it is completely unregulated. When people email or call you out of the blue avoid them at all cost. Certainly somebody you know has used a reputable SEO Firm and can refer that firm to you. If not, simply use the search engines to find an SEO in your area. If an SEO is successful you should be able to easily find them in the Search Engines. SEO San Diego CA is listed #1 for SEO San Diego and San Diego SEO on two different Search Engines.
SEO and Issue with Code
SEO is not a profession for tunnel vision, at least not here at San Diego SEO. One cannot merely drive in a straight line to get from point A to point B, which in this case means going from unranked to a top page ranking. An assembly line worker can go on autopilot and have a very productive day. SEO is nothing like that. It’s more like having homework everyday for the rest of your life. It is very time-consuming and always changing.
