Is Content Really King for Search Engine Rankings?

Recently, a colleague of mine made a very bold statement, in such a way that I almost agreed with him before I truly thought about it. “If you have great content, the Google rankings will come on their own!” He said this in a manner as though he were the CEO of Google and made up the rules himself! While he may be a salesperson personified (I almost believed him and I’m an SEO!), he is dead wrong about this. I’ll quickly touch on a few reasons why I believe otherwise.

I have numerous websites with zero content ranking well, meaning the sites are up and running and have meta tags and quality links pointing to them. Truthfully, the content has not been written simply because I have yet to get to it! What’s important to note, is that our San Diego SEO efforts alone have yielded results, a top ranking on Google. These links did not find us miraculously. Instead, we recruited the links and achieved the results we needed.

Another problem with the idea that content is king and all things important to SEO is, to the search engines, it makes zero difference if the content makes sense. For example, I could have a website written in prose to wow my clientele or I could have an unintelligent site that merely uses keywords throughout. The search engines cannot read and make sense of content. Who do you think would win the highest ranking? Unfortunately, it would be the latter. So, while we all love great content, it is not king; great inbound links are. It’s not your content; it’s your ability to MARKET your content that is king.
